How to Freeze and Reheat Broth
Yes, you can freeze broth for later use! Freezing broth is a great way to save time and effort making broth everytime you crave a hot bowl of noodles or soup. Here’s how to freeze and reheat broth properly.

What is Broth?
Broth is a flavorful liquid made by simmering bones, meat, or vegetables in water. There are several common broth such as beef bone broth, pork bone broth, chicken broth, vegan broth, etc. Although the ingredients might be different, broth basically contains water, fats, proteins, collagen, and minerals extracted from the bones. Broth has a rich umami taste, often slightly sweet or savory, making it a key ingredient for flavorful, delicious soups, noodles, and stews.
Can You Freeze Broth? (Chicken, Pork, Beef, and Vegan Broth)
Yes, freezing broth is possible and highly practical.
Advantages:
- Convenient and ready to use anytime – No need to prepare fresh broth every time you cook.
- Unchanged flavor – Freezing preserves the taste and nutritional value of the broth.
- Saves time and effort – Perfect for busy schedules when making soup or noodle dishes.
Disadvantages:
- Takes up freezer space – If not properly condensed, broth can consume a significant amount of freezer space.
How to Freeze Broth the Right Way
I usually make broth in advance to save time when preparing my favorite dishes, such as pho, beef noodle soup, and many more. Here’s how I make it so that it can be easily stored in the freezer while still preserving all its flavor and nutritional value.
- Make the Broth – Use a regular pot, pressure cooker, or Instant Pot. Add just enough water to cover the bones. The cooking time varies:
- Regular pot: 3+ hours
- Pressure cooker: 1-2 hours
- Instant Pot: 1 hour
- Reduce the Water Content – Simmer the broth on the stove after cooking to let the water evaporate until only about 1/3 of the original amount of liquid remains. This step helps save freezer space.
- Divide into Small Portions – Pour the condensed broth into small containers such as stainless steel cups, silicone molds, or safe plastic pudding molds. Freeze them until solid.
- Transfer to Zip Bags – Once fully frozen, unmold the broth portions and store them in labeled zip bags. This method saves even more space in your freezer.
How to Reheat Broth
By dividing the broth into small portions, you can easily reheat your broth whenever you need without having to wait for it to thaw:
- Take 1-2 frozen broth portions and add them to a pot of water.
- Cook on the Stove – Heat until the broth melts completely.
- Adjust the Flavor – Add more broth portions if needed and season with salt, sauces, or sugar to taste.
How Long Does Broth Last in the Freezer?
Broth can be stored in the freezer for 2-3 months. Avoid keeping it longer, as the flavor and quality may degrade. Always label the date to ensure freshness and food safety.
By following these steps, you can efficiently store, use, and enjoy homemade broth whenever needed!
