Easy Fried Rice Paper Snack
Easy Fried Rice Paper Snack
I was born and raised in the Middle of Vietnam, where rice paper wrappers are extremely familiar in my daily cuisine. Every family always has several types of rice papers at home to serve different dishes. The thinner ones are for rolling Fried Spring Rolls, while the thicker ones are used to wrap spring rolls and various other dishes. My family and I could enjoy rice papers with anything as a substitution for steamed rice. Besides dipping them in water and eating them directly, we also make many interesting snacks such as Vietnamese Rice Paper Salad (Bánh Tráng Trộn), Mixed Rolls (Bánh tráng cuốn), Tamarind sauce dipped rice paper (bánh tráng me), or just simple Fried Rice Paper Snacks.
The Fried Rice Paper Snack is simply made by frying rice paper rolls without filling until they become crispy, then mixing them with flavorings like cheese powder, paprika powder, or salted egg yolk powder. t’s also a very easy recipe with rice paper that takes only 15 minutes to prepare. Let’s take a look at the list of ingredients below.
Ingredients for Fried Rice Paper Snack
To make Fried Rice Paper Snacks, you need to prepare thin rice papers, the ones used for Fried Spring Rolls. Just look for the package with the illustration of Fried Spring Rolls on it. You can use round or square papers; both are fine.
Also, prepare your favorite flavoring powder, such as cheddar cheese powder or paprika powder. I ran out of cheese powder, so I used paprika powder, and it tasted great as well.
Also, prepare a pot or pan for deep frying. I used the pot to save oil. After frying, you can save the oil for later use by pouring it into an air-tight bottle.
Instructions
Believe me, it’s very simple. However, the important step is to roll (actually, nearly “fold”) rice papers into small rolls for frying. It’s like rolling a fried spring roll but without filling inside. Let’s start:
Step 1. Rolling the rice papers
- Lay a rice paper wrapper on a surface like a plate or a cutting board. Spray water all over one side of the paper. Remember, only spray water on one side so that the rice paper can soften enough for rolling but not become too wet to lose its crispiness after frying. If necessary, wait for a bit until it’s soft enough for folding and rolling.
- Fold the left and right edges of the paper toward the center. This step creates a double layer for each roll.
- Roll the paper or fold it from the bottom to the top. Try to roll it evenly but loosely.
Step 2. Frying Rice Paper Snack
Once you have completed rolling the snacks, it’s time to fry this tasty rice paper snack.
- In a pot or pan, pour 1 cup of oil and turn on medium heat. Wait until the oil starts to boil, then add the rice paper rolls. Don’t overcrowd to avoid them from sticking to each other. Fry until they puff up with a white color and crispy texture, then turn off the heat and set them aside on a paper towel to absorb the remaining oil.
Step 3. Seasoning with Flavoring Powders
- To add flavor to your Fried Rice Paper Snack, sprinkle your favorite seasoning on and shake them gently to avoid cracking. You can also serve them with a dipping sauce such as ketchup or sweet chili sauce (you can also find other substitutes for sweet chili sauce here).
- Moreover, this snack can contribute to the crispiness of another dish, such as Vietnamese Grilled Pork Noodle Bowl. Sometimes when I eat Vietnamese pancake, I wrap the pancake with fresh vegetables and this fried rice paper in another rice paper; it’s also a very cool experiment.
Tips for keeping fried rice paper crispy for as long as possible
Making a large batch of fried rice papers and consuming them over a long period is a great idea to save time and effort. To keep them crispy for as long as possible, consider the following tips:
- Avoiding contact with air: Put all of them in a bag and tie it tightly. If you store them in a box, remember to select an air-tight box.
- Wait until they cool down before storing: They must be completely cool before storing in a bag or box. If you store hot fried rice paper immediately after frying, the hot air can be trapped in the bag or box, causing the snack to lose its crispiness.
- Finally, always absorb the remaining oil after frying. The oil can leave an unpleasant smell on your snack if stored for a long time.
